5 Great Cities to Work in With a Communications Degree

Are you curious about which cities are great for those with a communications degree? As you might expect, small cities are generally not where most success is found. Those who tend to experience the most successful careers will have spent a considerable amount of time in larger cities such as those listed below. But it is important to note that not every large city is created equally as some of them are much better for communications specialists than others.

Los Angeles

Those with communications degrees interested in working in a city featuring many entertainment-industry jobs will most likely want to head to Los Angeles at the first available opportunity. Major television networks such as FOX have their headquarters here. Several entertainment outlets are based in the City of Angels as well. Public relations specialists can also find jobs working with performers, helping them receive as much positive media coverage as possible. And, of course, the second-largest media market in the country is a great destination for communications specialists of all types, not just those focused on the entertainment industry.

New York

New York is the largest media market at 20 million people, easily surpassing Los Angeles’ 13 million, and ABC, NBC and CBS are all headquartered here. Other famous media outlets located in the Big Apple include Time Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Cosmopolitan, the Associated Press, MTV, HBO, Glamour and Rolling Stone. World famous Broadway companies are based here as well.

Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. is also a large media market as it’s the seventh-largest metropolitan area in the country with 6 million people, making it another great city for those with communications majors to find a job. Additionally, it is the No. 1 place to be for those who want to work in politics. In fact, many reporters are also based here while they report on politicians representing their home areas. The White House is here, the House of Representatives is here, and the Senate is here. Many of these politicians and other D.C. residents are very focused on their public image and hire plenty of public relations specialists to take care of that for them.

San Francisco

The country’s sixth-largest media market (8 million people) is the place to be for public relations specialists as the average individual situated here makes $99,870 per year. Other communications positions also pay quite well thanks to a combination of top professionals heading to the Bay Area in high numbers and the high cost of living. Those with communications degrees looking to work in sports will have several teams who have recently won championships to work for or cover here, including the San Francisco Giants and Golden State Warriors.

Atlanta

Atlanta is the city that those with communications degrees who want to work for Ted Turner should head to as an assortment of major media companies that he oversees are located here. TBS, the predecessor for cable and satellite television, originated as WTCG, a local station. Other channels with national and worldwide reaches that are headquartered in Atlanta include CNN, TNT, Turner Classic Movies and the Cartoon Network. Of course, the 11th-largest media market in the country (6 million people) is home to a large number of other types of communications jobs as well.

Although these are generally the best markets for those interested in working in the communications field, note that the place that is the best fit for you may not be on this list. A great city to work in with a communications degree for you could be a small community with 100,000 people.
